BIRMINGHAM, AL — Eli Capilouto, who has served as acting provost since 2002, has been named to the position permanently. UAB President Carol Z. Garrison made the announcement today.

“Dr. Capilouto is an integral part of UAB’s senior management, and this constancy of leadership will help us sustain our momentum at UAB,” Garrison said. “He has done an outstanding job these last two and a half years, and has received broad-based support from the campus. Many have mentioned his integrity, his dedication and his commitment to accountability.”

Garrison credited Capilouto for leading the SACS accreditation process and planning for a new science and technology honors program, and working with the faculty to overhaul the undergraduate curriculum, which includes a more coherent course progression, a campuswide discussion book and senior capstone experiences.

“The search committee did a superb job and selected excellent candidates,” Garrison added.

“The past two years have been very rewarding as we have worked to position this university to become a truly dynamic and exciting place for faculty, staff and students,” Capilouto said. “We have a very ambitious plan and I look forward to helping make it become reality.”

From 1994 to 2001, while Capilouto was dean of the School of Public Health, the school undertook innovative budgeting, management, evaluation and reward policies. While the school’s faculty ranks remained level, active grant support quadrupled from $6 million to nearly $24 million. The school also introduced the first team-taught, case-based core curriculum in an accredited U.S. School of Public Health.

Capilouto is professor of health care organization and policy in the School of Public Health and also holds positions in the UAB School of Dentistry and the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy.

Capilouto joined UAB in 1975 as an instructor in the department of operative dentistry. He was named assistant professor in 1979. In 1985, Capilouto joined Harvard University as a Senior Research Fellow in dental care administration and received a Robert Wood Johnson Dental Services Research Scholars Award. In 1987, he was awarded a Research Fellowship by the National Center for Health Services Research and Health Care Technology to study at the Harvard School of Public Health. He returned to UAB in 1989 as assistant professor of health care organization and policy, and community and public health dentistry.

Capilouto has served as an ad hoc grant reviewer for numerous federal agencies and private foundations. He served on the Alabama governor’s task forces on Alabama Infant Mortality and Children’s Health Insurance. Additionally, he served on the American Dental Education Association Commission to examine the role of dental schools and other academic dental institutions in addressing oral health disparities and access to care.

A 1971 graduate of the University of Alabama, Capilouto earned his doctorate in medical dentistry from UAB in 1975. In 1985 he earned his master’s degree in public health from UAB. While at Harvard, he earned his master’s degree in health services administration and his doctorate in health policy and management.

Capilouto has served as a referee and editor for many professional journals. He was a member of the Pew Health Professions Advisory Panel for Dentistry and has served as a consultant to the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine and the American Association of Academic Health Centers. He is a member of the NIH National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council.

Capilouto is active in local volunteer organizations, having served as president of Temple Emanu-El and currently on the boards of the YMCA, Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House.
