The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Early Medical School Acceptance Program (EMSAP) has accepted 10 students for 2007-2008. June 13, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Early Medical School Acceptance Program (EMSAP) has accepted 10 students for 2007-2008.

EMSAP is a select program that gives academically superior high school seniors admission to the School of Medicine at UAB immediately after high school graduation, provided that they complete a baccalaureate degree at UAB. Students accepted into the EMSAP Program who complete their UAB bachelor’s degree have a reserved place in the School of Medicine at UAB.

EMSAP students attend seminars taught by professors and receive paid stipends to work with top UAB medical researchers each summer. In addition to their classes, the students attend national conferences on bioethics and neuroscience.

EMSAP students received numerous honors in 2007, including Valerie Gribben, who was selected for the USA Today All-USA College Academic First Team. Tarannum Jaleel of Huntsville won a Fulbright scholarship. Anand Iyer of Anniston won a Phi Kappa Phi award. Gregory Pence, Ph.D., a UAB professor of philosophy and medical ethics, directs the EMSAP program.

  • Arianna Mohiuddin, Mississippi School for Mathematics and Sciences, Biloxi

  • Caroline Howard, Evangelical Christian School, Memphis

  • Timmy Wang, Alpharetta High School, Atlanta

  • Mahniya Sadiq, Brookwood High School, Atlanta
