BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Kelci Burckhardt, 18, of Spanish Fort, Ala., a sophomore chemistry major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has been selected as one of 12 participants in the 2006 Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center Summer Student Program. The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program lasts from June 5 through Aug. 11.
She will participate in genetics research on leukemia with Susan K. Dutcher, Ph.D. Burckhardt was interested particularly in cancer research when applying for the position because of her family history with the disease. She is a graduate of The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science in Mobile and is the daughter of Dana and Kevin Burckhardt of Spanish Fort. Burckhardt is studying chemistry at UAB in pursuit of a career in biochemistry or genetics research.
