Three nurses with the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) won major awards from the American Society of Ophthalmic Nurses (ASORN) at their annual meeting last week in New Orleans.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Three nurses with the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) won major awards from the American Society of Ophthalmic Nurses (ASORN) at their annual meeting last week in New Orleans.

Annquinetta Kelly, R.N., an operating room supervisor, won the Edna Ashy award, named for the organization’s founder and its highest honor. Kelly presented research findings, “Managing Care of the Obese Ophthalmic Patient.”

Melanie Uzzle, R.N., an operating room nurse, received the Advanced Educational Scholarship award, one of two scholarships presented to ophthalmic nurses for the purposes of furthering their professional education.

Lynne Lanier ,R.N., assistant vice-president and chief nursing officer for the Eye Foundation Hospital, received the Member Honors award for service and contributions to ASORN and the ophthalmic community.

ASORN is a professional association of ophthalmic nurses dedicated to fostering excellence in ophthalmic patient care while supporting the ophthalmic team through individual development, education and evidence based practice.
