The fifth annual Girls in Science and Engineering Day will be held Saturday, May 2.
GSED is a day for sixth- through eighth-grade girls to come to UAB and participate in a variety of fun science and engineering activities led by female professors, scientists, and students from UAB and the surrounding community. All girls will take part in three different exciting workshops throughout the day.
Students will learn about various professions by participating in health science, applied science and engineering workshops. In previous years, more than 150 middle school girls took part in activities including heart dissection, medical suturing and forensic science.
Girls in Science and Engineering Day was created in 2011 by UAB students Alison Barnard, DPT, and Farah Khan, M.D., as a way to inspire and empower Birmingham-area middle school girls to achieve and excel in science and engineering fields.
GSED is free for all participants and there are still spaces available.
