The University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Arts and Sciences will present a lecture by Associate Professor of Theatre Cliff Simon, MFA, Friday, Oct. 25, as part of the Theodore Haddin Arts and Sciences Forum.
Distinguished faculty throughout the college will present topical lectures on issues ranging from cinema to math to racial disparities. This year’s theme is “Lunch . . . Ideas . . . Conversation.” The events are free and open to the public and take place at 11:30 a.m. in Heritage Hall, Room 524, 1401 University Blvd.
Simon will present an updated lecture topic: “Painting Cakes: Paths to Creativity through Experiential Learning.” Simon has been teaching theatrical scenic design at UAB since 2002. Previously, he designed painted cakes in New York and Santa Fe, N.M., and once for Diana Ross in Switzerland.
That career was a life-changing learning experience about cakes and painting. More importantly, Simon says that career taught him about the correlations between creativity and fear, traumatic experience and comedy, drama and Zen. At this Haddin forum, Simon will discuss his pastime and may give a cake-painting demonstration.
