Paul Goepfert, M.D., professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Division of Infectious Diseases, will chair the HIV/AIDS Vaccines (VACC) Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, which reviews National Institutes of Health applications concerned with all aspects of development of vaccines for HIV and related retroviruses.
Goepfert’s laboratory concentrates on understanding the immune correlates of protection against HIV disease progression with a focus on cell-mediated immune responses. The ultimate goal of this work is to use findings to aid the development of an effective HIV vaccine to prevent infection. Goepfert also directs the Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic, which conducts clinical trials of candidate vaccines to protect against HIV and other diseases such as influenza, hepatitis and anthrax.
Geopfert will serve a two-year term ending June 30, 2015.
