MacDougall receives award from ADA

This award honors a faculty advisor who has distinguished themselves in mentoring dental students.

Mary MacDougall, Ph.D., associate dean for research and James R. Rosen Chair of Dental Research in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry, has received the Student Clinician of the American Dental Association’s (SCADA) 2012 Burton C. Borgelt/SCADA Faculty Advisor Award. This award honors a faculty advisor who has distinguished themselves in mentoring dental students.

MacDougall is director of the Institute of Oral Health Research and the Global Center for Craniofacial, Oral and Dental Disorders at UAB. She has taken a leadership role in student training, serving as director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) Institutional Training program at the UAB School of Dentistry called Dental Academic and Research Training (DART). MacDougall is director of the dental pipeline program PreDART supported by the William Gies Research Award/American Dental Educators Association, and she is the faculty advisor of the UAB PreDental Society. She has mentored students at all levels including high school, college, graduate, professional and residents.  Many of MacDougall’s past students now hold tenured faculty positions at dental schools across the United States. In 2005, she received the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) National Student Group Mentor of the Year Award, and the AADR Distinguished Mentorship Award in 2011.
