Alexander elected president of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society

bruce_alexander_2008_1C. Bruce Alexander, M.D., vice chair of the UAB Department of Pathology, has been elected president of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. His election was announced at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the AOA Board of Directors on Oct. 6, 2012, in San Francisco. The society was founded in 1902 as an organization dedicated to honoring academic achievement, professionalism and exceptional teaching in the field of medicine. There are currently 120 chapters in medical schools in the United States, and more than 150,000 members, including 54 Nobel Prize winners in physiology, medicine and chemistry. Each year, AOA grants more than $575,000 to medical students and faculty for awards, projects and prizes that recognize outstanding commitment and dedication to caring for others and providing high-quality health care.

In addition, Alexander delivered the 2012 Stanley L. Robbins lecture at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard University Medical Center on Sept. 24, 2012. Alexander’s presentation was titled “Training in Pathology: History, Opportunities and Future Challenges.” The Robbins lecture and visiting professorship honors the esteemed physician and author of Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, one of the best-selling medical textbooks of all time.
