Two art professors from UAB had works selected for The Red Clay Survey, which highlights the best of contemporary Southern art through a selection of works in all styles and media.
Gary Chapman, M.F.A., professor of painting, and John Douglas Powers, M.F.A., assistant professor of sculpture in the UAB Department of Art and Art History, both won prizes for their works in the show. Chapman won the Alabama Artist 2-D Award for his work “Re-Creation,” an 84 x 64 inch work of oil on gold leaf, wooden panels, mixed media and found objects.
Powers won an Alabama Artist 3-D Award, for his work “Field of Reeds,” a sculpture work of wood, steel, plastic and electric motor, which in 2009 placed seventh among more than 1,200 entries in ArtPrize, an international competition in Grand Rapids, Mich.

In its 11th presentation at Huntsville Museum of Art, works for The Red Clay Survey are determined by jurors with national renown. The 80 works which were chosen range in style from the traditional to the avant-garde and include painting, drawing, sculpture, fine craft, photography and mixed media works, from 61 artists in 10 states.
Cash awards totaling more than $8,000 were presented to the 12 winning artists. The Red Clay Survey show is on display through Sept. 16, 2012, at the Huntsville Museum of Art, 300 Church Street South. Call 256-535-4350 for more information.
