Serge Bokobza, Ph.D., has been named chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at UAB.
Bokobza has been an associate professor of French literature and cinema studies at UAB since 1986. He specializes in 19th and 20th century French literature, French literature outside of France, the theory of titles, the history of cinema and Jewish studies. Bokobza received his licence ès lettres (bachelor’s degree) in comparative literature and diplôme d'etudes supérieures (master’s degree) in French from the University of Paris X Nanterre. He received his doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Bokobza has published articles on 19th and 20th Century French writers and a book on Stendhal, contributed to film criticism with articles on Stanley Kubrick and Cédric Klapisch and also produced a 58-minute documentary, “Léon Blum: for all Mankind.”
Bokobza is president of the Alliance Française of Birmingham. For his contributions to his profession and community, Bokobza received numerous honors and awards, including the title of Knight in the Order of Academic Palms by the French government in 1998.
