Michael Ho Ambassador HeadshotMichael Ho, a University of Alabama at Birmingham alumnus, was awarded the 2022 Virgil L. Tweedie Scholarship worth $10,000 by Alpha Epsilon Delta, a national health and medical pre-professional honors society.

This prestigious scholarship is awarded to only one student in the entire nation, recognizing one outstanding pre-medical or pre-dental student in good academic standing who exemplifies academic and extracurricular excellence. The scholarship goes directly toward the student’s cost of attendance for medical school.

“As the first recipient in UAB’s history, I am extremely honored and grateful to have received this award,” Ho said. “The award will be a tremendous support in helping me with the cost of medical school. More so, I believe this scholarship is a testament of all the great things the Alabama Delta chapter has done at UAB, as well as within the surrounding Birmingham area.”

To be eligible, Ho went through a rigorous application process that required two recommendation letters — one from the AED chapter adviser and one from an AED chapter member at UAB.

"Michael Ho has been actively involved with AED since his freshman year, moving up the ranks from associate member to volunteer coordinator, to secretary, to president,” said Delia Lewis, former chapter adviser of AED at UAB. “He has exhibited courage, dedication, selflessness and strong leadership, and I cannot think of a student more deserving of the Tweedie Scholarship.”

Ho graduated with High Distinguished Honors in the Global and Community Leadership Honors Program, a specialized program in the UAB Honors CollegeHo graduated from UAB in spring 2022 with a degree from the College of Arts and Sciences in neuroscience and French and extensive co-curricular involvement experience. While at UAB, he served the Alabama Delta chapter of AED as the volunteer director, secretary and, ultimately, president during his senior year.

AED created this scholarship in 2004 to honor one of AED’s most beloved members, Virgil L. Tweedie, and his wife. They were among AED’s most active members, serving in various roles throughout their time, including faculty sponsor, region director, national councilor and national president for eight years.
