University of Alabama at Birmingham will begin a new, monthly lunch series for students and the community to hear from diverse leaders with whom they can personally identify. Each month, the series will feature a different speaker or panel of leaders who are people of color, women, differently abled or LGBTQ+.
TheThe first free, virtual event will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17. The speakers will be Sheriff Mark Pettway and District Attorney Danny Carr, both African American men who are the first to hold their positions in Jefferson County, Alabama.
The series is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences’ departments of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Political Science and Public Administration, and African American Studies.
“These gentlemen are paving the way for better relationships between law enforcement and the community; they are also making strides for other African Americans to hold the same or other similar positions in the future,” said Carin Mayo, Master of Public Administration program manager for the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.
