Kimberly Hendershot, M.D.Kimberly Hendershot, M.D., assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Acute Care Surgery, has been named an associate member in the new American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™. She will be inducted at a ceremony Sept. 25, and her membership will last for a period of five years.
Hendershot is a distinguished surgical educator whose experience in the field includes working nationally with the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, as taskforce chair for the career development and membership committees. She also sits on the Association for Surgical Education National Residency Preparation Committee, in the curriculum review section. Within the UAB Department of Surgery, Hendershot has been an associate program director, director of the Surgery Boot Camp preparation course and the director of Trauma Education. She is co-director of the UAB Women in Surgery Program.
Hendershot is the statewide chair of the ACS Alabama Committee on Trauma. Her presentations have been seen at national meetings, and her publications have been featured in the American Journal of Surgery and Journal of Surgical Education. Finally, she is Advanced Trauma Life Support course director for all UAB courses, as well as the director of the Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma course, which was the first one started in Alabama with a grant from the Alabama Committee on Trauma — it is a joint course with UAB and the University of South Alabama.
“I am proud of Dr. Kimberly Hendershot and this lifetime achievement she has reached,” said UAB Department of Surgery Chair Herbert Chen, M.D. “Over her many years with us at UAB, Kimberly has demonstrated her steadfast commitment to training the next generation of surgeon-scientists and her willingness to lead diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in the department, like our Women in Surgery program.”
Hendershot says she is pleased and honored to be inducted.

Developed under the auspices of the ACS Division of Education, the academy recognizes surgeon educators who have devoted their careers to surgical education. Individuals are selected as members or associate members following stringent peer review. The academy’s mission is to play a leadership role in advancing the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties, promoting the highest achievements in the lifetimes of surgeons.
