Sumner B. Harris and Seth Iwan, both doctoral students in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Physics, received graduate fellowships of $37,000 per year. Undergraduate scholarships of $1,500 per year were awarded to Britta Manifold and Keston Smith, both physics majors.
The graduate students supported under this program are designated as NASA Space Grant Fellows and will interact with the NASA Glenn Research Center and the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center during their thesis research.
The undergraduate students are designated as NASA Space Grant Scholars with a goal to pursue careers in aerospace science, technology and allied fields. Yogesh Vohra, Ph.D., professor and university scholar in physics and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, is the UAB campus director for the NASA Alabama Space Grant Program, which supports graduate fellowships, undergraduate scholarships and K-12 outreach activities for NASA in the Birmingham area.
Founded in 1989, the consortium is a voluntary association of all seven research universities in Alabama along with other community colleges, educational outreach, industry and government.
