The Radio Television Digital News Association’s Edward R. Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news.
Alquist will direct the operations of WBHM and the Gulf States Newsroom as she develops and executes a strategic plan for the station’s news, programming, fundraising and community engagement missions.
Public Radio WBHM 90.3 FM also won regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for Continuing Coverage, Excellence in Sound and Hard News.
WBHM was lauded for educating the community on the coronavirus, offering news briefings for nearly 50 other Alabama radio stations, covering racial injustice protests in Birmingham and its partnership with UAB to inform people navigating the first COVID-19 testing site.

WBHM aims to raise $100,000 for its Local Journalism Innovation Fund, supporting news reporting, podcasts and other local storytelling projects in Birmingham and Alabama.
Through the pioneering Gulf States Newsroom, NPR and public radio stations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana share resources, plan together and deliver more reporting in areas with widening gaps in local news coverage.
WBHM won for Overall Excellence, as well as for Feature Reporting, Newscast, Hard News and Sports Reporting, and will now advance to compete nationally.
WBHM’s news gathering resources will be shared with the rest of the state on behalf of the public, says WBHM General Manager Chuck Holmes.
