University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Infectious Diseases is growing its research footprint with the opening of a new Sexual Health Research Clinic, housed on the second floor of the Community Health Services building at 930 20th St. South.
TheThe Sexual Health Research Clinic will help UAB researchers continue to advance their work in the realm of sexually transmitted infections and sexual health, giving UAB’s infectious diseases team expanded space to further ongoing research and patient care efforts.
“Here at UAB, we pride ourselves on not only having high-volume, high-impact research, but having the ability to contribute tremendously to the global STI and sexual health landscape. This new clinic will enable us to conduct even more research that we hope will change the course of how we treat and understand sexual health,” said Edward Hook III, M.D., professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases. “This clinic will give our team more opportunities for research, while also giving more access to students who wish to conduct research in this field.”
The UAB’s Division of Infectious Diseases has conducted consistent and impactful research contributions to the field of sexual health, STIs, HIV and more, garnering international attention in the process. For instance, the division has been able to study every single test for chlamydia and gonorrhea for the past 25 years, and the 1917 Clinic is known as one of the most advanced research and patient care clinics on a global scale.
The new Sexual Health Research Clinic will give researchers more space and resources than ever before.
“The study of infectious diseases is collaborative and global, and this new research clinic will continue to advance UAB as a global leader in our field, allowing us to continue to make transformative contributions to the world of sexual health,” said Jeanne Marrazzo, M.D., MPH, director of the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases and the director of the UAB STD Research Program.
