The UAB Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine has announced American Society of Anesthesiology endorsement of the UAB simulation program.
UAB has recently become one of only 43 ASA endorsed centers in the United States and the only site in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas or Louisiana. UAB will offer simulation courses for Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology that count towards the fourth part of the anesthesiologist’s recertification process. Participants will receive 25 recertification points for course participation.
UAB’s one-day simulation course will satisfy the entire Part IV MOCA requirement for the five-year cycle. The course will also offer participants continuing medical education credits.
The UAB Office of Interprofessional Simulation is a joint venture between the UAB Health System and University. OIPS manages two simulation centers, offers faculty development in simulation and delivers simulation for healthcare professionals across the training level spectrum. In 2015, OIPS delivered more than 17,000 hours of simulation at UAB.
Anesthesiologists attending this MOCA simulation course can expect a high-caliber simulation experience. Participants will practice crisis resource management techniques followed by debriefing with simulation-trained experts.
According to the 2014 American Board of Anesthesiology survey, more than 96 percent of all respondents reported that their MOCA simulation course was an overall positive experience, and 94.1 percent would recommend the course to a colleague.
Approximately 98 percent of those surveyed from UAB reported that their simulation experience would improve their clinical performance.
“We respect the anesthesiologist’s busy schedule,” said UAB MOCA Simulation Course Director Jeff Simmons, M.D. “Our course is designed to be fair and convenient, and offer the highest possible value.”
UAB will begin courses in the Spring of 2016. MOCA Simulation courses fill up quickly, so interested applicants should enroll soon. Information from the ABA can be accessed at www.asahq.org/education/simulation-education. UAB MOCA Course information can be accessed at www.uab.edu/simulation/moca.
