Becker’s Hospital Review has named the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center as one of the nation’s “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs.”
The UAB Cancer Center, the only one listed from the state of Alabama, was selected for the 2015 edition of its list as an organization dedicated to treating cancer patients as well as researching the deadly disease. It was recognized for its clinical outcomes, multidisciplinary care teams, clinical expertise and oncology research. The UAB Cancer Center was also noted for its influential cancer education and prevention efforts.
Becker’s Hospital review is a monthly publication offering up-to-date business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems. It also publishes a number of lists of outstanding facilities and individuals throughout the year.
Hospitals were selected for inclusion on this list based on a number of factors, including recognition received, accreditations earned and cancer-oriented group memberships held. Specifically, the Becker’s editorial team examined U.S. News & World Report cancer care rankings, CareChex cancer care rankings, BlueCross BlueShield Association Blue Distinction Center designation, National Cancer Institute designations, Commission on Cancer accreditations, and awards and National Comprehensive Cancer Network membership.
The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Deep South region, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. The center is home to outstanding faculty of more than 330 physicians and researchers, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise in oncology.
“We foster a supportive and collaborative environment for our scientists to conduct some of the world’s most cutting-edge cancer research,” said Edward Partridge, M.D., director of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. “It’s exciting to be recognized with this type of honor as we strive to offer our patients access to the most advanced treatments and clinical trials through a nurturing team approach.”
With its team of specialized doctors and state-of-the-art technology, the center has about 5,000 new patients each year and provides ongoing care to more than 20,000 cancer patients each year.
