A University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry professor has been selected to a leadership role on the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs.

Ashraf Fouad, DDS, professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics, was appointed chair and began his yearlong term during the ADA meeting last month after serving as a member of the council since 2021

“It is a great honor for me to be elected for this position,” Fouad said. “The CSA plays an important role in informing the American Dental Association’s decision-making process, responses to queries and current issues, and strategies for future goals and directions.”

The CSA provides information on a broad range of critical scientific issues of interest to the dental profession and the public. The council also gives guidance to the science staff in the ADA Seal of Acceptance Program, the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry, the Center for Scientific Information, the Center for Research and Standards, and the Center for Product Evaluations. Members are selected based on their scientific knowledge and application, clinical or basic research expertise, and scientific analysis and communication.

During his term as chair, Fouad hopes to provide effective leadership on efforts for efficient dissemination of scientific evidence to the ADA and member dentists, guide the expansion of the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance Program, and help identify the right expertise needed in all disciplines of dentistry to serve on the council.
