The Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital is changing its name to the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital. It became part of the UAB Health System in 1997, providing quality eye care, offering an ophthalmology residency program and participating in vision research.
“The change is a firm acknowledgment of our association within UAB Medicine and clearly defines our role as the only facility in the state of Alabama dedicated to vision-care services and surgical treatment for eye disease," said hospital CEO Brian Spraberry.
The UAB Callahan Eye Hospital offers the only 24-hour, seven-day-a-week eye emergency room in the state, and it is the first hospital in the nation to be designated a Level I Ocular Trauma Center by the American Society of Ocular Trauma. The hospital offers general ophthalmology, glaucoma, retina/vitreous, cornea, ocular plastics, pediatric ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology care.
