University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health and the Region IV Public Health Training Center will host a free webinar Tuesday, May 10, at 11 a.m. with Sarah MacCarthy, Sc.D., the first Magic City LGBTQ Health Studies Endowed Professor in the UAB School of Public Health.
Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer face a disproportionate number of structural, programmatic and individual-level barriers to address their health and well-being. TheShe will discuss important concepts and terms related to LGBTQ health and how the rapidly changing landscape impacts LGBTQ health as well as research and practice, specifically in the Southeast. She will also provide resources that can be used to find evidence-based practices to serve LGBTQ populations.
“LGBTQ communities have developed incredible resilience and coping mechanisms in response to daily experiences with stigma and discrimination,” MacCarthy said. “It is important we learn how to appropriately support and empower LGBTQ communities, as both advocates and allies.”
