Day of Service 2016415 University of Alabama at Birmingham students spread out around the Birmingham area on Monday, Jan. 19, for a day of service to honor the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The annual event, organized by the UAB Leadership and Service Council, is held in partnership with Hands On Birmingham. Organizers say the event is a way for students to honor King’s legacy and take part in the National Day of Service held each year in observance of his birthday.

“With this day of service, we hope students have reflective experiences,” said David Dada, coordinator of civic engagement in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership. “The event is a way for students to be of service to the Greater Birmingham community, which is something UAB prides itself on as an institution. We hope students form connections with one another and that the experience is a catalyst for them to do other projects throughout the year.”

Students teamed up to perform service projects around the Birmingham metro area. Projects included interaction with the elderly, home repairs, neighborhood cleanups, and more. Project sites included Red Mountain Park, Kings Home Ranch, Turkey Creek and Buck Creek.
