University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) students were honored for their work at the Birmingham ADDY awards ceremony, the annual celebration of the best in advertising, held Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013. All the students are art studio majors with a concentration in graphic design, and they are taught by UAB Assistant Professor Doug Barrett, M.F.A., and Department of Art and Art History Chair and Professor Erin Wright, M.F.A.
Winners in the Best of Show Campaign category were seniors Daniel Twieg and Empress Searight, both of Birmingham, Amy Clark of Mountain Brook and Tammy Watson of Hayden, Ala., for the Sloss Furnaces Rebranding Campaign, “Steam Punk Since 1882.” The entry also won a silver award in the Student Campaign category. Senior Jenny Waycaster of Calera, 2012 graduate Katelyn Armstong of Madison, senior Katie Brasfield of Birmingham and senior Jasmine Gooden of Munford, Ala., won silver in the category for “The Lost Years of Sloss” branding campaign.
Waycaster won gold in the Student Packaging category for Dixieland Delights, with the silver going to senior M. Umair Khan of Hoover for Golden Egg Co. Waycaster also won silver in the Student Point of Purchase category for The Mandarin menu.
Twieg won gold in the Student Photography category for Sloss Furnaces. Senior Jin Chung of Troy, Ohio, won silver in the Student Illustration category for “See Birmingham!”
Senior Miranda Hart of Birmingham was awarded silver in the Student Publication category for a book cover for Naked Lunch, while senior Emily Kerley of Trussville won silver for a wedding invitation guide.
In the Student Poster category, seniors Shannon Robinson and Charles Carraway, both of Birmingham, won silvers for a beer poster/infographic and a boating safety poster/infographic, respectively.
