PNC Bank partnership expands UAB tax preparation service

The UAB chapter of NABA will provide free tax preparation for those who qualify

NABA_logoThe University of Alabama at Birmingham Collat School of Business chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) is working with PNC Bank and the United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) to provide free tax preparation for those who qualify. The partnership, part of the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, is open to families or individuals with $49,000 or less in taxable income.

This is the sixth consecutive year that UAB has teamed with UWCA on the VITA program. It is the first year that PNC Bank is involved. The partnership with PNC Bank will provide more opportunities for students and allow for the addition of a new remote site at Boutwell Auditorium thanks to a grant of $25,000. There will be six VITA sessions in 2013; in addition to Boutwell, there will be four sessions at the UAB School of Business and one at UWCA.

“PNC Bank’s involvement allows us to increase our membership and therefore increase the services and savings we provide to our community,” said Jenice Prather-Kinsey, Ph.D., NABA co-advisor. “UAB students have prepared more than 300 returns over the past three seasons and saved families more than $60,000 in fees.”

Anyone interested in volunteering is invited to a free training session on either Friday, Nov. 30, or Friday, Dec. 7. Training sessions will be held at the UAB Collat School of Business, 1150 10th Ave. South, in Room 111 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Volunteers are asked to register by calling (205) 458-8970 or emailing TaxHelp@uwca.org.
