On Thursday, April 4, and Friday, April 5, the University of Alabama at Birmingham will host Give As One — a universitywide celebration of philanthropy. Give as One is a collaborative fundraising event among UAB, including UAB Medicine and the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine’s alumni, supporters, faculty, staff and students to come together and make an impact on both this generation of students and the city of Birmingham.
This year, the community will have the opportunity to support 19 projects representing all schools and colleges across campus, as well as units such as athletics and the Provost’s Office.
Donors can support the projects that mean the most to them, as Give As One supports giving opportunities that touch every corner of UAB’s campus.
“There is no limit to what we can accomplish when we all come together,” said Clay Shannon, UAB’s director of Annual Giving. “Any amount is welcome. Give As One presents a unique opportunity for anyone to make a difference across the UAB community by contributing directly to projects crucial for each school and unit on campus.”
These highlighted initiatives are just a few of the exciting collaborations and programs benefiting both UAB and the Birmingham community.
UAB’s ArtPlay Community Education provides lifelong learning through the arts to people of all ages, skill levels, incomes and geographical areas. ArtPlay provides meaningful interaction with renowned artists and exciting opportunities for artistic growth and development for students, parents, teachers and the community.
The UAB School of Education’s Maker Space provides education students a hands-on place to practice what they are learning in their courses using free resources. In this space, students will have access to advanced technology and resources, like block coding technology and robotics, video and audio recording equipment, books to use for practicing read-alouds, and poster printers for research and classroom use, as well as laminators and other various daily tools our students in both departments need to succeed, at no additional cost to them.
The UAB Honors College Leadership Development Academy is providing students with the ability to develop leadership skills as an undergraduate, and better prepare them for the workforce and as future leaders. This is done through special events such as lunch and learns with local leaders and community partners, the annual Blazing Hot Topics etiquette dinner, and the Leadership Academy. Each of these components helps our students build on leadership skills they will need to pursue further learning and serving in their community.
To further bolster UAB student-athletes’ success, Blazer Made will engage with community partners and play a vital role in fulfilling the promise of a holistic education for all UAB student-athletes. Support is critical to making Blazer Made sustainable and expanding offerings and customizing services to meet student-athletes’ individual needs.
