UAB's student-managed portfolio wins national competition

The Green and Gold Fund, UAB’s student-managed investment portfolio in the UAB Collat School of Business, recently claimed first place in the largest student investment conference in the world. Now in its 11th year, the Redefining Investment Strategy Education (R.I.S.E.) forum is sponsored jointly by the University of Dayton and the United Nations Global Compact.

The forum includes a portfolio competition entered into by top business schools across the country. The Green and Gold Fund competed in the Alternative Investment-Style category and won first place based on its superior risk-adjusted returns in 2010. The fund won first place in the 2008 Growth-Style Portfolio category.

The fund has been featured on CNBC and in Business Week magazine. It holds nearly $500,000 in assets as of April 2011 and is managed by undergraduate and M.B.A. students with oversight provided by faculty advisor Jacob Gelber, J.D., M.B.A.  Its holdings include Google, Amazon, Apple, Walgreens, Wells Fargo, BHP Billiton and Teva Pharmaceuticals.
