Markell Jones of Trussville and Mary Ann Jimenez of Killen are the new Mr. and Ms. UAB.
The new Mr. and Ms. UAB were announced Saturday, Oct. 19, at the UAB Homecoming game. The scholarship competition is presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s National Alumni Society.
First alternates in the competition are Alex Clark of Madison and Morgan Richardson of Center Point.
Started in 1981, the Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition is one of UAB’s longest-standing Homecoming traditions. The winners each receive $2,500 scholarships and serve as ambassadors of UAB and on the Student Alumni Society Leadership Council in the coming year. The first alternates each receive $1,000 scholarships. The 10 finalists were selected through an interview process at the NAS Alumni House. The winners were chosen through an additional round of interviews and a student vote, held during Homecoming Week.
Jones, 21, of Trussville, is a junior majoring in medical industrial distribution in the Collat School of Business with a minor in Spanish. He is a student alumni representative, president of Best Buddies and a brother of Pi Kappa Phi. He volunteers with the Exceptional Foundation and Glenwood Foundation and works with the Boys and Girls Club as a tutor. He is the son of Angela Jones and Seth Jones.
Jimenez, 20, of Killen, is a junior majoring in public health in the School of Public Health. She is in the UAB Honors College’s Global and Community Leadership Honors Program and is an Emerging Leaders recipient. Jimenez is in the Undergraduate Student Government Association and is a UAB ambassador, resident assistant and orientation leader, as well as a volunteer at Children’s Hospital. She is the daughter of Catalina and Jaime Guevara.
Clark, 20, is a junior majoring in accounting and the son of Frank and Deena Clark. Richardson, 20, is a junior in the UAB Honors College Personalized Pathway, majoring in political science in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the daughter of Yolanda Hartman and Donald Richardson.
The competition finalists are:
- Ania Krutul, 19, of Fairhope, a sophomore in the UAB Honors College’s Global and Community Leadership Honors Program, majoring in economics, and the daughter of Joanna Louise and Frank Louise.
- Cassidy Nolan, 19, of Hueytown, a sophomore majoring in elementary education in the School of Education and the daughter of Tracey Nolan and Greg Nolan.
- Courtney Zajic, 20, of Helena, a junior majoring in nursing in the School of Nursing and the daughter of John and Cristi Zajic and Warren and Pam Meeks.
- Hemant Srivastava, 20, of Hoover, a junior in the UAB Honors College’s University Honors Program, majoring in neuroscience in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the son of Sunil Srivastava.
- Jimmy Pham, of Mountain Brook, a junior majoring in medical industrial distribution and the son of Brian Pham and Kim Nguyen.
- Viral Patel, 20, of Madison, a junior in the UAB Honors College Personalized Pathway, majoring in finance/medical industrial distribution, and the son of Pravin Patel and Vimala Patel.
