Women who are currently battling or who have survived women’s cancers and breast cancer are invited to attend the Women’s Cancers Survivors Workshop on Saturday, April 13. The workshop is hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and SurviveAL/Gulf States Young Breast Cancer Survivor Network.
In the past, UAB has hosted the Young Breast Cancer Survivors Workshop. This is the first year women’s cancers will be included.
“We noticed that women of all ages and with other cancers also attended past workshops,” said Bailey Hendricks, a nurse and coordinator of the event. “They were very interested in receiving educational support and participating in the event. We realized the workshop would be beneficial to not only young breast cancer survivors, but also women living with women’s cancers: vulvar, vaginal, cervical, uterine and ovarian.”
The workshop will include sessions primarily focused on survivorship, as well as sessions for family members and friends who provide care and support to cancer survivors.
“The information we provide at the workshop includes topics such as living with cancer, living a new normal after diagnosis, maintaining cognitive health, managing finances, learning about advanced care planning, and participating in mind-body activities such as yoga, meditation and art therapy,” Hendricks said. “We will have a special session for caregivers on how to care for yourself and your loved ones with cancer. Family members and friends are an important part of survivorship, and it is important to provide support to them.”
The workshop is free and will be held from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the UAB Alumni House, 1301 10th Ave. South. For free registration, visit the Women’s Cancers Survivors Workshop website.
