As the University of Alabama at Birmingham celebrates 50 years of dedication to research, medicine, service and education, the university will also celebrate 50 hours of giving during the third annual “I Heart UAB Giving Days” on April 16-18.
Giving Day is a university wide celebration of philanthropy and a demonstration of what happens when Blazers come together to advance UAB. This year, the fundraising initiative is promoting 18 passion-fueled projects, each representing a variety of campus initiatives. Faculty, staff, alumni, students and the Birmingham community are all encouraged to give toward the projects that appeal to their interests, no matter the amount.
“Giving Day touches all aspects of campus — students, patients, faculty, staff and even the Birmingham community. It gives us all a chance to celebrate philanthropy at UAB while supporting what is important on a personal level,” said Angel Singleton, director of Annual Giving at UAB. “Whether you’re passionate about mental health, medical breakthroughs, scholarships or early childhood education, we all come together to grow UAB through our support on Giving Days.”
For example, the UAB Commission on the Status of Women EmpowerHER Education Endowment Fund is a project through which donors can make an impact in the lives of collegiate women. The Commission’s members support work-life balance initiatives, training and development of emerging leaders, and community outreach to improve the academic climate and work environment at UAB.
Another project, UAB Dentistry Cares Community Day, aims to make a difference in the lives of the Birmingham metro area’s low-income and underserved population at no cost by treating basic dental needs — cleanings, restorations and extractions.
The Nurse Family Partnership, administered by the UAB School of Nursing, works with low-income, first-time mothers-to-be at home to help guide behavioral changes needed to improve the health and welfare of the mother and child in an effort to improve infant mortality rates in Alabama.
