Stream UAB Looking different imageThe University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for Engagement in Disability Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability will host “LOOKING. DIFFERENT.” spotlighting disability culture through art and conversation. The event will take place Thursday, May 8, from 5-8 p.m. at Haven, 2525 Sixth Ave., S, Birmingham, AL 35233.

The event will feature the artwork “Portrait of Rosemarie Garland-Thomson” from Riva Lehrer’s exploration of cultural depictions of disability, a discussion between Lehrer and Garland-Thomson, and a short reading from Lehrer’s critically acclaimed memoir, “Golem Girl.”

This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. The first 50 attendees will receive a free book, and a bookseller will be in attendance to sell books from both Lehrer and Garland-Thomson. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided, and a cash bar will be available.
