A new season of musical performances has just been announced at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The performances are presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music and feature students, faculty and guest artists.
Most performances take place in UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. Nearly all the performances are free, and those that are ticketed help support the department.
Student ensembles in the department feature more than 100 music majors and approximately 150 more students from many other majors, representing all undergraduate colleges and schools at UAB, says Chair Patrick Evans, D.M. Ensembles include the Concert Choir, Jazz Combo, Marching Blazers, Gospel Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Computer Music Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Brass Chamber ensembles, Faculty Brass Quintet and more.

UAB Piano Series concert featuring Sofya Gulyak, 4 p.m., UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Russian pianist Gulyak was awarded the first prize and the Princess Mary Gold Medal in 2009 at the 16th Leeds International Piano Competition, the first woman in the history of the competition to achieve this distinction. Gulyak has performed with dozens of orchestras around the world. She is professor of piano at the London Royal College of Music.
