Singer, pianist, composer and bandleader Bruce Hornsby will perform Friday, Nov. 3, presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.
“An Evening with Bruce Hornsby” is set for 8 p.m., in the center’s Jemison Concert Hall. Tickets are $68, $58 and $48. For tickets, call 205-975-2787 or visit www.AlysStephens.org.
Hornsby has built one of the most diverse, collaborative and adventurous careers in contemporary music, creating a large and accomplished body of work and employing a bevy of stylistic approaches. Drawing from traditions of gospel, rock, blues, bluegrass, classical, jazz, jam bands and Motown, his wide-ranging collaborations have included work with Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Robbie Robertson, Ornette Coleman, Crosby Stills and Nash, Leon Russell, Branford Marsalis, and film director Spike Lee, among others.
Throughout his career, Hornsby has maintained the integrity, virtuosity and artistic curiosity that were hallmarks of his work from the start. His Grammy Awards include Best New Artist for Bruce Hornsby and the Range in 1987, Best Bluegrass Album in 1990 and Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1994. “The Way It Is,” “Mandolin Rain,” “Every Little Kiss” and “The Valley Road” are among his hits. He played piano on Don Henley’s hit “The End of the Innocence,” as well as playing piano on Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.”
Live for Live Music said of him: “No amount of practice can replace the natural connection that Hornsby seems to possess with the very heart of music itself. Each inflection, each note seems to be informed from a higher plane or a deeper part of the soul than most can reach.”
