David Grisman and Del McCouryRejoice in the best of bluegrass with Del McCoury Band with David Grisman, presented by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.
The concert will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the center’s Jemison Concert Hall. Tickets are $67, $58 and $48. UAB students and faculty may purchase $25 tickets; a limited number of $25 tickets are available for each show. All UAB students, faculty and staff may receive a 20 percent discount on single tickets.
Del McCoury and David “Dawg” Grisman met at the first show McCoury ever played on banjo with Bill Monroe in the spring of 1963, at New York University in Greenwich Village. Three years later, “Del & Dawg” played their first gig together in Troy, New York, at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Both celebrated the arrival of first-born sons, Monroe Grisman and Ronnie McCoury, within a month of each other, according to the duo’s brief bio.
Through the years, they have shared the stage at venues and festivals across the country and, in 2012, released “Hardcore Bluegrass,” a unique collection of bluegrass classics made at two studio jam sessions in the 1990s. Celebrate the nearly 50-year bluegrass friendship these two legendary musicians share, and one of the rare occasions this year to enjoy the entire Del McCoury Band, and their special guest, Dawg.
