Dukes of Dixieland
Musicians can join University of Alabama at Birmingham music students and faculty for the 2016 Jazz Summit, set for Saturday, April 2, and the Percussion Symposium, happening April 15-16.
Presented by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, these events are powerful learning opportunities for young musicians, or for any age.
The UAB Jazz Summit is designed for young performers in high school grades nine-12. For the New Orleans edition of the UAB Jazz Summit on April 2, clinicians include David Phy, DMA, trombone, of the Dukes of Dixieland, as well as UAB Music Associate Professor Steve Roberts, DMA, trumpet; and instructors Carlos Pino, guitar; Brandon Peeples, bass; Gary Wheat, saxophone; and Michael Glaser, drums.
Iron Giant PercussionStudents will be placed according to their skill and experience, and will be mixed in with UAB jazz students in their various ensembles. Students of all levels are encouraged to apply and will be placed in classes and ensemble situations at a variety of levels. This year’s summit is based around New Orleans-style jazz, so it is open to all wind players, not just trumpet, trombone and saxophone. This is a great way for flutists, clarinetists and other woodwinds to get a valuable and fun jazz experience. A free participant concert is set for 7 p.m. that evening. The UAB Percussion Symposium is perfect for percussionists of any age. On Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16, the UAB Music Percussion Symposium will feature concerts and clinics in all aspects of percussion, including ensemble, steel band, hand drumming, drum set, marimba and much more. Led by Associate Professor Gene Fambrough, DMA, guests will include Andy Harnsberger, John Scalici, Michael Glaser, and the UAB Steel Band and Iron Giant Percussion, a quartet of UAB music students and graduates formed at the university.
