A new season of performances by talented students, accomplished faculty, local talent and impressive guest artists has been announced for fall 2015 by the University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music.

Nearly all of the performances are offered free.
The department is home to world-renowned scholars and performers, with recent appearances by faculty and students in Egypt, Russia, France, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Brazil, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Mexico, as well as television broadcasts throughout the world.
Coming this season are guest artists who will perform, including Deborah Popham, soprano; Andy Harnsberger, marimba; Reverie Berger, mezzo-soprano; Janet Hopkins, mezzo-soprano, with pianist Armen Shaomian, who will present a recital and master class on the songs of William Bolcom; and Oskar Espina-Ruiz, clarinetist.
Master class guests will include Keith Wolfe, general director of Opera Birmingham and vocal coach, accompanist and founder of the podcast The Diction Police Ellen Rissinger. Each will work with voice students during the semester.
Pianist Norman Krieger is set to perform Oct. 25 to kick off the UAB Piano Series for 2015-2016. Krieger regularly appears with the major orchestras of North America, and he has also been heard as guest soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Prague’s Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Turkey’s Presidential Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand’s Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Taiwan’s National Symphony Orchestra. On Nov. 5, join the UAB Department of Music in collaboration with UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts for a free music and art evening. The event connects AEIVA’s exhibit “David Maisel: American Landscape and the Apocalyptic Sublime” with American vocal music, featuring UAB voice faculty and pianist Chris Steele. Gallery viewing and reception at 5 p.m., with a concert at 5:30, in the AEIVA lobby, 1221 10th Ave. South.
On Nov. 15, the UAB Gospel Choir will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a fall concert.
