Grammy award-winning jazz musician Poncho Sanchez and His Latin Jazz Band will perform at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Sept. 3.
Hosted by UAB Artist-in-Residence Eric Essix, the performance is the fourth installment of the The Essentials, ASC’s innovative series devoted to honoring the rich history of jazz. The fourth installment will explore the complex, multinational musical fusion known as Latin jazz. The performance is sponsored in part by Welch Hornsby and UAB Student Life.
The evening will begin with a survey of the history of Latin jazz, the music and the artists — led by Essix and legendary percussionist Poncho Sanchez. The second set will feature Sanchez with his snippets of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other melodies.
The show is set for 7 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Tickets are $39.50. Call 205-975-2787 or visit www.AlysStephens.org.
UAB students can enjoy the show for free. Tickets for UAB faculty are $10. UAB students are asked to register here in order to reserve seating.
