Image courtesy of the artistNew York City-based Colombian artist Jessica Angel will give a free lecture, “Multidimensional Space,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Presented by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts and the Department of Art and Art History, the lecture will take place in the Hess Family Lecture Hall in the AEIVA, 1221 10th Ave. South.
Angel is a dynamic, emerging contemporary artist, says AEIVA Director Lisa Tamiris Becker.
“We are pleased to bring Jessica Angel to UAB to speak on her work,” Becker said. “Her visit will coincide with our show ‘Warhol: Fabricated,’ and I believe many people will enjoy engaging with her while also seeing the exhibition.”
Angel now has installed a massive, site-specific project at Seton Hall University’s Walsh Gallery that studies the intersection between art and astrophysics. In 2013 she organized “Pintura Abierta,” a collaborative project that prompted the circulation of ideas about painting and site-specific possibilities at El Museo del Banco de la República in Bogotá, Colombia.
Angel’s recent work takes over architectural interiors, exploring the possibility of visual illusion and space transformation with the use of perspective. She transforms the processes and usage of traditional media — such as mural painting, large-scale drawings and wallpapering — to create immersive environments that may enable a disorienting encounter with reality. Digital physics, astrophysics, information sciences, architecture and network theory are among the research that fosters her current practice.
Angel was nominated for the World Technology Award in the Arts Category in 2014 and was invited to represent Colombia as an artist-in-residence at the 2014 Vancouver Biennale. She was awarded the Teaching-Artist Residency at The Cooper Union, as well as the Media Arts Fellowship, in 2012. She participated in “City Walls” with the Brooklyn Arts Council in 2010 and was the BOFFO artist-in-residence in 2009. Her work has been exhibited in Bogotá, New York and Miami, as well as in Washington, D.C., in La Paz, Bolivia, and in Mexico. She received an honorable mention at the fourth International Biennial SIART in Bolivia in 2006 and at the first International Drawing Biennial of the Americas in Mexico in 2006.
