gene fambroughThe University of Alabama at Birmingham Percussion Ensemble will present a free concert at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South.

The ensemble, directed by Gene Fambrough, DMA, will perform selections including a work written by David Gillingham to commemorate D-Day, titled “Normandy Beach-1944.” The work is cast in three sections, characterizing the eve of D-Day, the tragic conflict and the aftermath. Part I of the concert will be played without pause and will include two percussion trios and a quartet “in the round,” Fambrough says. These contemporary selections include “Trio per Uno” by Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic, “Not Far from Here” by Blake Tyson, “The Frame Problem” by James Romig, “Winter Nocturnes-Distant March” by Patrick Long, “Battlestations II” by Rich Holly and “Promise Music” by Clif Walker.

For Part II of the concert, the ensemble will perform a ragtime encore, which will include “Log Cabin Blues” from 1936, written by George Hamilton Green; “Back Talk,” also from 1936, by Harry Breuer; and “Xylophonia,” from 1925, written by Joe Green.
