The University of Alabama at Birmingham is paying tribute to African-American history and culture with a month of events throughout February. The UAB community and public at large are invited to lectures, movie screenings, a musical performance and more. A full listing of events is online. Here are a few activities scheduled to take place. All listed are free and open to the public:
A Forum on Black Family Structure: “Is the Black Family Good As Is?” — 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13. Experience a discussion about the state of the black family. Lister Hill Library, fourth floor, The Edge of Chaos, 100 University Blvd. Sponsored by Black Student Awareness Committee and Black Graduate Student Association.
“The Children’s March” Movie and Lecture — 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18. Watch the story of how in 1963 young people in Birmingham, Ala., braved fire hoses and police dogs and brought segregation to its knees. Following the film, several of the participants will speak. Black Barbershop Discussion — 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26. Local barbers will provide haircuts to select students while those attending engage in discussions pertinent to African-American men. Blazer Hall Resource Learning Center, 920 16th St. South. Sponsored by Blazer Male Excellence Network.
Closing Program Concert: “Modern Voices of Soul” — 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Hear performances from various local musical artists, all with a positive and uplifting message. Alys Stephens Center Sirote Theater, 1200 10th Ave. South. Sponsored by Black Student Awareness Committee.
