University of Alabama at Birmingham Professor of Piano Yakov Kasman, DMA, will perform with his daughter, Aleksandra, a UAB Honors freshman, with the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra in North Carolina on Oct. 12.
The Kasmans will perform Camille Saint-Saens’ timeless “Carnival of the Animals.” The HSO will set the theme for the evening’s performance with Haydn’s Symphony No. 82 “The Bear” and Respighi’s charming aviary masterpiece “The Birds.”
Kasman is studying piano at UAB with her father.
“It is a wonderful and rare thing when a teacher and a student perform together in a duo, and of course, it is even more special when it is also a father and a daughter,” the elder Kasman said.
Known to her family as Sasha, Aleksandra has won medals or been named a finalist in the International Competition in Memory of Vladimir Horowitz in Kiev, Ukraine, the Blount-Slawson Young Artist Competition and the Alabama Symphony Volunteer Council’s Lois Pickard Competition. Most recently she won second prize and the Young Jury Award on June 14 in Columbia, S.C., at the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition.
