See the powerful story of the world’s largest youth poetry slam in the indie documentary “Louder Than a Bomb” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center.
Every year, more than 600 teenagers from more than 60 Chicago-area schools gather for the world’s largest youth poetry slam — a competition known as “Louder Than a Bomb.” Founded in 2001, it’s the only event of its kind in the country, a youth poetry slam built from the beginning around teams. Directed by Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel, the film chronicles the stereotype-confounding stories of four teams as they prepare for and compete in the 2008 event. See the film, then meet the filmmakers and discuss the work.
This season, the ASC and Sidewalk Film Festival celebrate the art of film with these special events in a series designed to get the audience up close and personal with the country’s hottest new directors. Tickets are $10 and $8 students. Call 205-975-2787 or visit www.AlysStephens.org.
