Lecture and demo: DJ Shiftee, 2009 World DMC Champion
Winner of the World DMC Championships and a scratch DJ legend, New York City-based DJ Shiftee will present a lecture on performance, history and music at 6 p.m. in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Following the lecture, at 7:30 p.m. DJ Shiftee will give a brief scratch DJ demonstration in the UAB Visual Arts Gallery courtyard. The event is in conjunction with the site-specific exhibition of works by artist James “Dalek” Marshall exhibition “Interference from Indirect Information.” Rain venue is the UAB Hill University Center Alumni Auditorium, 1400 University Blvd. Admission is free and open to the public. “Handwork: South Asian Folk Art Now”
An exhibition of works selected from private collections in Maine, Connecticut, Ohio and Birmingham. Curated by UAB Assistant Professor of Art History Cathleen Cummings, the works have not previously been exhibited together. Representing different perspectives on contemporary South Asian folk art, the works include relief sculptures, paintings and textiles. The show is in conjunction with the Edward M. and Hermione C. Friend Lecture featuring Stephen Huyler, an expert on South Asian folk art, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.

The Edward M. and Hermione C. Friend Lecture
Huyler, an art historian, cultural anthropologist, photographer and author, has spent a large part of the last 32 years traveling in Indian villages documenting craftsmanship and traditional and contemporary cultures. His focus during the past decade has been on the sacred arts and spiritual rituals of practical Hinduism. Much of his work has been focused on women’s art and identity in India, in particular art of the domestic sphere, and women’s ritual art. Huyler is the special guest for a 6 p.m. lecture in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. A reception will follow in the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. South. Folk Art and the Empowerment of Women: A Conversation with Stephen Huyler, Gail Andrews and Kathryn Myers
Andrews, director of the Birmingham Museum of Art and an expert in American Southern folk art, will talk with guest lecturer Huyler, art historian, cultural anthropologist, photographer and author, along with artist, collector and curator Myers about the revival of traditional arts – in India and the United States – from the viewpoints of economic development, social change and advances in the status of women. They’ll also discuss the impact of such efforts on the folk art traditions in South Asia and the American South. To be held at 12:30 p.m. in the UAB Visual Arts Gallery, 900 13th St. South. UAB Department of Art and Art History alumna Skees will present a selection of her “cozy portraits,” as well as a selection of custom-knitted “cozies” that her subjects wear in the photographs. UAB 2011 Juried Student Annual exhibition, reception
The UAB Juried Student Exhibition invites all students enrolled in studio art courses at any level in the previous year to submit up to three works for consideration. The exhibition will feature works by UAB art studio students, selected as the best by artist Willie Cole, 2011 juror.
