For the third year UAB will treat all incoming freshmen to two free shows presented by UAB’s own world-class Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.
Every incoming freshman will receive the Alys Stephens Center Freshman Arts Card, redeemable for two complimentary tickets for shows happening right on campus this season. The card will be distributed to all incoming freshmen Aug. 15, 2011, when students are at the Alys Stephens Center for the Freshman Discussion Book Program. Each Freshman Arts Card must be activated at the ASC Box Office with valid student ID. Call the ASC Box Office at 205-975-2787 or visit at 1200 10th Ave. South on the UAB campus or online at www.AlysStephens.org.
The Alys Stephens Center offers great perks and discounts for students. For most regular season performances, a special block of student tickets are reserved. Student tickets are $20 in advance and $10 day of show for most regular-season performances, limited to one per student and available on a first-come, first-serve basis with valid student ID. The student ticket rate does not apply to special events. This season students can see performances for just $20 by artists including the avant-garde, aerialist group Project Bandaloop, Patty Griffin, Ricky Skaggs, Cyndi Lauper, comedian Rickey Smiley, Noche Flamenca, Golden Dragon Acrobats of China, Mo Rocca, Pink Floyd Experience, Al Jarreau, Medeski Martin & Wood, Robert Cray, The Chieftains, Margaret Cho, Wynton Marsalis and much more.
The season kicks off with a free outdoor party, inter-ART-ive, featuring UAB’s Drumline, an open mic stage, craft beer tasting from Free the Hops and Birmingham Budweiser, food for sale from The Cantina on Wheels, a community art project and headliner Big Sam’s Funky Nation from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.
