The Alys Stephens Center will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a season of arts performances that challenge traditional ideas of art and performance. The theme for the season is “Flirting with Boundaries,” presenting the best in all genres. Well-known and loved artists scheduled to perform this season include Patty Griffin, Ricky Skaggs, Cyndi Lauper, Al Jarreau, Medeski Martin & Wood, Robert Cray, The Chieftains, Margaret Cho and Wynton Marsalis. See the season schedule here.
Highlights for the coming season are new, innovative artists with ideas that push the limits and don’t fit neatly into categories. Designed as a sampler for all that is to come in the anniversary season, the Alys Stephens Center will present an opening festival featuring a free community party, inter-ART-ive, from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. Big Sam’s Funky Nation will headline the party, which also will include a performance by UAB Music’s Drumline, an open mic courtyard stage, craft beer tasting from Free the Hops and Birmingham Budweiser, food for sale from The Cantina on Wheels and a community art project.
Kicking off the season Sept. 19-23 is a weeklong residency by avant-garde aerialist group Project Bandaloop. The company will rappel and climb outside on the ASC building and inside the Jemison Concert Hall to create a site-specific performance.
