The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Alabama Audubon, is set to host Harvard ornithologist Scott Edwards, Ph.D., for a seminar titled “Bicycling, Birding and #BLM Across America in a Summer of Chaos.”
On April 13, in the Hill Student Center from 7-8:30 p.m., Edwards will present and discuss his 76-day, 3,800-mile bicycle-riding journey across the pandemic-stricken United States in 2020.
Amid the heightened racial tensions of that summer, Edwards boldly displayed Black Lives Matter signage on his bike over the course of his expedition. Having ridden through a multitude of diverse neighborhoods, communities and sceneries, Edwards will share his experiences through photographs and videos, detailing the people he met, places he went and the amazing variety of birds he saw.
While offering a unique perspective to the benefits of cycling, Edwards intends to analyze the stereotypes placed on many people of color across the country.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required by April 10. To register, click here.
