Grammy Award-winner LaBelle is an R&B icon, named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Singers and a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame. She started in the 1960s as lead singer and front woman of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells. In the 1970s, the group changed its name to LaBelle, released the hit “Lady Marmalade” and became the first African American vocal group to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
LaBelle’s career soared as a solo artist, with hit singles “The Best is Yet to Come,” “New Attitude,” the No. 1 duet “On My Own” with Michael McDonald, “Superwoman” with Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick, “Burnin’,” “All Right Now,” “When You Talk About Love,” “Way Up There,” “New Day,” and more. She has been honored with awards including NAACP Image, Soul Train Music, Essence Triumphant Spirit, BET Walk of Fame, Lady of Soul, Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, World Music, American Music, BET Honors and Lifetime Achievement, and more, and nominated for two Emmy Awards. LaBelle released her first jazz album, “Bel Hommage,” in 2017.
LaBelle’s work as a humanitarian is just as legendary. She has been an advocate for adoption, and for those fighting diabetes, cancer, and HIV/AIDS, and supports many causes and nonprofit initiatives. In 1994, she was diagnosed with diabetes and shortly thereafter became a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association. She is also an actress and an author and has had her own line of cookbooks and foods.
