Students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will put into action the tenets of the UAB Creed — honor and integrity, diversity, service, scholarship, and innovation — Feb. 6-10 for annual Creed Week.
The university will highlight 10 different events to promote the UAB Creed.
“This Creed Week, students will have the opportunity to learn about the creed through interactive events and connect with their peers, guest speakers and the entire UAB community,” said Vice President for Student Affairs John R. Jones III, Ph.D. “We invite faculty, staff and alumni to also participate as we want every Blazer to live out the tenets of the creed.”
Service kicks off Creed Week this year. On Monday, for Rise Against Hunger, participants can work together to pack meals for the hungry. Serve205, a UAB student-led organization, will build donations of canned vegetables, meats, fish, fruit and more from community members into a “Canstruction” structure at the Hill Student Center.
Diversity is also emphasized this Creed Week. On Tuesday, Feb. 7, Washington Post national political enterprise reporter Robert Samuels will discuss the creation and influence of his book, “His Name Is George Floyd: One Man’s Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice,” which discusses institutional racism in United States history through the lens of Floyd’s life.
Students can discuss diversity and innovation over dinner Feb. 8 during Candid Conversations: Kayla Whitter. That same day, the UAB Police Department and students can enjoy coffee and doughnuts during the weekly Wake Up Wednesday event at the Off-Campus Student Lounge.
On Thursday, Feb. 9, students will artistically showcase their perspective of the UAB Creed to win scholarships during the Spark Your Fire Arts Competition. Blazer Way Award recipients will also be announced during this event.
The seventh annual, student-led ORCA conference on Friday, Feb. 10, will focus on supporting social justice on college campuses.
Students will also have the opportunity to pick up free food or swag during lunch Monday and Tuesday and mark a personally meaningful creed tenet on the #ISTANDFOR Pin Board displayed in the Hill Student Center throughout the week.
