An updated fable sees a new generation of beloved children’s characters, depicted on stage and sure to dazzle kids and adults alike.
Lightwire Theater brings “The Adventures of Tortoise and Hare” to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2. Glowing visuals, poignant storytelling and music from classical to pop bring this tale into a new and brilliant light.
Combining theater and technology to bring stories to life in complete darkness, Lightwire Theater is internationally recognized for its signature brand of electroluminescent artistry, according to its artist’s statement. The group experiments with shapes and designs to develop puppetry-based neon creatures that come to life.
The story begins with Aesop’s classic fable of “The Tortoise and the Hare” but finds them 10 years down the road, now with children of their own and exploring modern-day distractions. Smartphones and video games create a new landscape of lost connections to life experiences. Tortoise Junior and Lil’ Hare’s adventures lead them into unexpected territory, and Old Man Tortoise and Big Daddy Hare must come together, despite their differences, to find and save their children and make it to the finish line.
This show is suitable for all ages. Tickets are $15. Admission is free for children age 3 and under. Visit AlysStephens.org or call the ASC Box Office at 205-975-2787 for tickets or for more information.
Based in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lightwire Theater creates and delivers innovative theatrical experiences to audiences worldwide. The group had a hit performance with “Dino Light” at the Alys Stephens Center in 2019.
