The spotlight will shine on student creativity and the fine arts at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with concerts, exhibitions, musical theater and more April 11-20.
Presented by the UAB College of Arts and Sciences, Arts Week 2022 will showcase students from the departments of Music, Theatre, English, and Art and Art History — and the extraordinary talent from across the college’s fine art academic units.
Featured events will include the annual BFA Exhibition, a milestone concert with the Department of Music and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, a new open-mic night featuring creative writing students, Theatre UAB’s production of “The SpongeBob Musical,” and more. The events will take place at UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall in the Hulsey Center for the Arts.
Spring is often framed as a time of new beginnings, says College of Arts and Sciences Dean Kecia M. Thomas, Ph.D.; but it is also when work done beneath the ground or behind the scenes comes to fruition, as plants emerge from the ground and new blossoms appear on the shrubs and trees.
“The same is true for artists, they work together for long hours away from public view and ultimately emerge providing us with breathtaking beauty, sounds and sentiments,” Thomas said. “I hope you will join me in witnessing the new work that emerges from our Fine Arts programs as we celebrate our student artists.”
With this curated list of performances, the college invites students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to attend and engage with the arts at UAB. See more College of Arts and Sciences arts events in April on the UAB Campus Calendar.
